Repeated ancestors and COI

Learn why a dog can appear more than once and how known ancestry affects COI.

A repeated ancestor

The same dog may correctly appear along more than one ancestral path. That is different from a dog incorrectly appearing as its own sibling or parent.

How COI is calculated

HoundLine calculates COI from ancestry currently recorded and linked for the selected dogs. Unknown ancestors are treated as unrelated, so incomplete pedigrees can produce a lower figure than a more complete pedigree.
